Car Brakes

HOW DOES YOUR BRAKE SYSTEM WORK?

Your brakes system is responsible for reducing the speed of a vehicle, stopping, preventing over-acceleration when driving downhill and keeping the vehicle stationary when still or parked.

The braking system consists of hydraulic, mechanical and electronic components. Manufacturers are now featuring Anti-Lock Braking Systems throughout most of their product range as standard equipment.

THINGS TO LOOK OUT FOR WITH YOUR BRAKES:

Regular brakes system maintenance requires the inspection, adjustment and replacement of various components at selected kilometre and/or monthly intervals, as specified by the manufacturer. Periodic inspection of the brake system is not usually required.

Items that may indicate a fault with the brake system are:

* Spongy brake pedal feel.
* No power assistance when applying brakes.
* Vehicle unable to brake in a straight line.
* Wheels skidding when braking.
Squealing or grinding noise when braking.
